Why Audio

We are often asked, “why audio? We already share text (emails/blogs) and video”. Internal comms are yet to fully understand the power of audio messages – and we are not talking about podcasting.

The Greater Good Science Center at Berkeley recently posted an article that provides good reasons for trying audio messaging inside an enterprise.

“Proving that a sigh is not just a sigh, scientists conducted a statistical analysis of listener responses to more than 2,000 nonverbal exclamations known as “vocal bursts” and found they convey at least 24 kinds of emotion”

There is a reason that overly-polished leader communications tend to generate apathy or even hostility. They are too clean, not human at all – the missing component? Emotion. At Soundbite, we recommend leaders leave their audio recordings with all the “umms” “likes” “ers” “whoops” and other spontaneous sounds we tend to emit when speaking. They make us sound real and help people warm to us.

As it turns out, the researchers agree, “Our findings show that the voice is a much more powerful tool for expressing emotion than previously assumed,” according to the lead researcher. Better than text and video? Why not try.
